For 23 seasons, the Wizards went by the name the Washington Bullets. While they were the Bullets, the team took the NBA crown in 1978. It was the one and old time when the team won it all. Leading up to that, the Bullets made the finals twice, and made the playoffs for nine seasons in a row. This season, the Wizards sent the Raptors home four games to zero. They hope to keep moving to the NBA Finals.

The Washington Wizards have bounced back nicely from the end of the “Gilbert Arenas” years. They managed to return to the playoffs on the back of their great defense, led by All-NBA point guard John Wall. A year ago, the Wizards finished the season 49-33, good for the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. After defeating Atlanta in round one, they took Boston to the limit in round two before bowing out in game seven.

This off-season, their biggest move was sign John Wall to a long term contract. The team declined to add any other veteran players to their roster, and seem to be counting on all of this young talent, to just keep getting better. This could be the season for the Wizards, one where they go deep into the NBA playoffs.

The Washington Wizards had an average 2015-2016 season. They finished the season with a dead level record of 41-41, three games out of the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. During the offseason, they fired Randy Wittman and hired Scott Brooks as their head coach. Other than that, they had a very quiet offseason. They did not have a first round draft choice either due to the Markieff Morris trade. So far this season the Wizards are 19-18, good for the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference, so they are getting better. However, many pundits are asking if they have the right collection of players to get all the way back into serious contention for the first time since the Gilbert Arenas era.

The Washington Wizards had a decent season a year ago, finishing the regular season with a record of 43-39. The Wizards first order of business this offseason was the draft, and to the surprise of some, they held onto the fifteenth selection overall, and used it on shooting guard Troy Brown from Oregon. Brown was just a freshman a year ago with the Ducks, so he will have to grow as a player. After the draft, the Wizards made a very notable trade, acquiring guard Austin Rivers from the Clippers for center Marcin Gortat. In free agency, they first signed forward Jeff Green, and then two days later signed center Dwight Howard. The Dwight Howard signing is very interesting. When he was in Orlando it was hard to find a better center in the game than Howard. He carried the Magic on his back to the 2009 NBA Finals. Three years later he left the Magic, and ever since then has bounced around the league. He first with the Lakers but that was full of turbulence so he moved on to the Rockets, where he found some success. He returned to his hometown of Atlanta and spent one forgettable season with the Hawks before being traded to the Hornets. He was released by the Hornets earlier this year. This could very well be Howard’s last chance to the right the ship, and if he doesn’t, he might be finding himself heading into early retirement soon. The Wizards have a lot of questions marks. They could either turn into home run answers, or go the other way. We will see.

A few years ago, the Washington Wizards began to construct a team around their talented guard duo of John Wall and Bradley Beal. Many pundits predicted their eventual rise to the top and even began to argue about when they would win the NBA Championship. None of this ever happened. The farthest they ever got was the Conference Semi-Finals, which they reached three times. So, they pulled the plug and began to rebuild.

They finished the season a year ago 32-50 and ended up with the 9th selection overall in the draft. With that selection, the Wizards decided to bulk up their forward position with Rui Hachimura from the Gonzaga Bulldogs. Before free agency, the Wizards traded former All-Star turned journeyman center Dwight Howard to the Memphis Grizzlies for shooting guard C.J. Miles. The Wizards were the third team in the Anthony Davis trade, and they ended up with center Moritz Wagner, forward Jemerrio Jones, guard Isaac Bonga, and a 2022 second-round draft choice for nothing much other than cash considerations. Not bad. In free agency they added a pair of point guards in Ish Smith and former All-Star Isaiah Thomas. It appears as if the Wizards are positioning themselves to be big sellers at the trade deadline. They have two inviting trade chips in John Wall and Bradley Beal which they could get a haul for, plus if they can rebuild Isaiah Thomas’s standing they could get something for him as well.
