The Washington Nationals won it all in 2019. Will 2022 be their year once again? After finishing 2021 with a record of 65-97 there is room for improvement, to be sure. Juan Soto was a team leader with a batting average of .313, and driving in 111 runs. The team also said goodbye to Alex Avila, as he retires from baseball.
The Washington Nationals have been one of baseball’s best teams for quite a while now, and they have yet to get the job done in October. Once again, last year they were among the serious contenders. They finished the season 97-65, winning the National League East by a whopping 20 games over the Miami Marlins, and the second-best record in the league overall. In the National League Divisional Series, they met the Chicago Cubs, winners of a tightly contested central division. The Cubs had caught fire at the right time and ousted the Nationals in five games. Other than changing managers again this offseason, going from Dusty Baker to Dave Martinez, the team had a very quiet offseason.
As we enter the 2018, season, once again, the Nationals have one of the best rosters in the game. First, there is right fielder Bryce Harper, one of the best power hitters in recent memory. The big question with Harper though is will he focus, as he is headed for a massive payday next offseason, as some are predicting possibly as much as 400 million over 10 years. Then there is talented young third basemen Anthony Rendon who it 25 home runs with 100 RBI’s a year ago. Next, we have shortstop Trea Turner, another of these super-talented young players at the position. Turner could be a perennial All-Star, batting .300 and playing gold glove caliber defense. Then there is ace pitcher Max Scherzer who has been called the 250 million dollar bargain by the media as he has been nothing short of incredible since signing with the team in free agency a few years ago. This team is too talented to not win a World Series. At some point, they just have to. Could that be 2018?
