Philadelphia Phillies 2021 Season

The Phillies finished their 139^th season with an overall record of 82-80. It’s been a decade since the Phillies made the post season.  In 2018 and 2019, the team had a very similar final record, after improving from their 66-96 2017 season. Four pitchers signed with other teams before the 2021 season began. Tommy Hunter, Jose Alvarez, Jake Arrieta and Brandon Workman moved on during the off season. The team picked up Ian Hamilton off waivers. After Bryan Price retired at the end of the 2020 season, Caleb Cotham led the team for 2021.

The Phillies wound up 6.5 games behind from the division winning Braves. It seemed that the road games were a challenge for Philadelphia. They ended the season with a 35-46 overall road record. Roman Quinn struggled at the plate when the season started. Roy Halladay’s jersey was retired on August 8. Returning to the team in 2022, Odubel Herrera signed a one year deal. The team is working hard to build their bullpen. Ryan Sherriff was picked up from Tampa Bay. Kyle Schwarber was the big pick up for the Phillies. Schwarber agreed to a four-year contract, worth 79 million. Nick Castellanos agreed to a five-year, 100 million dollar deal in March of 2022.  

Phillies 2018 Season Review

In 2018 the Philadelphia Phillies began emerging from their current rebuild, winning 80 games, and getting promising performances from young talents like outfielder Rhys Hoskins, second basemen Cesar Hernandez, and third basemen Maikel Franco. Not much else can be said about last season, so most fans are looking to 2019.

After a very quiet November to begin the offseason, the Phllies began making a whole lot of noise, some of it very loud. In December, they made headlines when they traded first basemen Carlos Santana and infielder J.P. Crawford to the Mariners for shortstop Jean Segura, left-handed pitcher James Pazos, and right-handed pitcher Juan Nicasio. Next up, they added outfielder Andrew McCutchen for three years. To finish off December they added a number of players on minor league deals, including catcher Rob Brantly, infielder Gregorio Petit, right-handed pitcher Josh Martin, and outfielder Shane Robinson. In January they added one of the best relievers in the game, right-handed pitcher David Robertson, on a three-year contract. Next they settled arbitration with the likes of Cesar Hernandez, Maikel Franco, left-handed pitcher Adam Morgan, right handed pitcher Hector Neris, and right-handed pitcher Jared Eickoff. In February they added veteran catcher Drew Butera, a man known for his defensive prowess, on a minor league contract, and extended talented starting pitcher Aaron Nola for four seasons. It also appears they are about to add big free agent Bryce Harper, although the final details of the contract have yet to be released. The Phillies are on the rise, and could make some serious noise in 2019.
