The Minnesota Golden Gophers men's basketball team has been an integral part of college basketball since 1896, with a storied legacy and a passionate fan base. It all started with an overall record of 3-5 that season, as the team was not part of a league. In 1901, 1902, and 1918, the Gophers had undefeated seasons. The 2012-13 season was one of the best for Minnesota. The team finished the regular season with a record of 21-13 and made it to the third round of the NCAA tournament. They ranked #8 in the country that season.

In recent years, the team has struggled, but they continue to build momentum, striving for excellence in the Big Ten Conference. Despite facing challenging competition in the last few seasons, the Gophers have consistently showcased young talent, resilience, and growth on the court.

Ben Johnson, a Minnesota alumnus, took the helm as head coach in March 2021. A former Gophers player, Johnson brings a deep understanding of the program and a commitment to developing homegrown talent. His coaching philosophy emphasizes strong defense, player development, and fostering a competitive team culture. Despite recent challenges, Johnson remains focused on building a resilient and dynamic team.

For the 2025-26 season, Niko Medved took over as head coach. Overall, the team only improved its record by one victory. The team lost key players to injury late in the season, going down to a rotation of just six players. The six remaining members were smaller, making it tough to keep up with larger opponents late in games. Medved had to put together a roster that had not been working as a team, since many of the 2025 roster had left via the transfer portal.

These records reflect the team's performance over the past decade, highlighting periods of both success and challenge. Notably, the 2016–17 season stands out with a 24–10 overall record and an 11–7 mark in Big Ten play, leading to an NCAA tournament appearance.
