Tigers 2021 Season Recap

In 2021, the Detroit Tigers final record was 77-85, putting them in third place in the American League Central division. The team took no time off to ponder about their position, hiring Ryan Sienko as catching coordinator. The team is also making major changes to their development staff. Detroit hopes to have solid output from Robbie Grossman again in 2022. The Tigers brought in a new pitching coach and director of pitching development. This team may still be in rebuild mode, but they are moving in the right direction.  

2019 Tigers Review

The Detroit Tigers won 47 games in 2019, giving them room for growth. As they are in the early stages of a rebuild, the Tigers made just a few moves this offseason to improve the team and decide to hold back for future opportunities In December, they added catcher Austin Romine, second baseman Jonathan Schoop, and first baseman C.J. Cron on one-year contracts. They also added right-handed pitcher Zach Godley via a minor league contract. In January they settled arbitration with right-handed pitcher Michael Fulmer, left-handed pitcher Matthew Boyd, right-handed pitcher Buck Farmer, outfielder JaCoby Jones, and left-handed pitcher Daniel Norris. They also added right-handed pitcher Ivan Nova on a one-year contract and traded left-handed pitcher Matt Hall for catcher Jhon Nunez.

They also added right-handed pitcher Alex Wilson and Infielder Jordy Mercer on minor league contracts. The Tigers' plan is to sit back and let these young players develop. For example, their prized prospect, right-handed pitcher Casey Mize, is expected to make his major league debut later this season. Mize is considered to be the best right-handed pitching prospect in baseball. In addition, they do hold the top draft choice this June, which they are expected to use on Vanderbilt shortstop Austin Martin. The franchise is in the early stages of a long rebuild, and in baseball, rebuilds can take years. However, they can also be fun to watch.
