The Dallas Mavericks have completed the 2018-2019, finishing the year 33-49. At the end of the season, they said goodbye to one of the best ever, power forward Dirk Nowitzki. His home finale was one to remember. In 33 minutes of play, he scored 30 points, on five of 14 from long range and 11 of 31 overall. Not quite in the level of Kobe Bryant, who scored 60 points in his career finale, but still a great way to end. So with Nowitzki out of the picture, what do the Mavericks do next? Well, the answer to that is simple. They build around their young star duo. The anchorman is small forward Luca Donic who averaged 21.2 points per game and 7.8 points per game a season ago. The other star is Kristaps Porzingis, who missed all of last season with a torn ACL but is off to a good start this season with 17.3 points per game and 9.4 rebounds per game. Did the Mavericks do anything to build around these two this offseason?

Thanks to the trade that brought Luca Donic to the Mavericks, they did not have a first-round draft choice this year. In free agency, they added shooting guard Seth Curry, center Boban Marjanovic, and shooting guard Dakota Mathias. Curry has been a nice piece so far this season for the Mavericks, averaging 10.2 points per game mainly off the bench.

It appears more likely that the Mavericks are in no hurry to force a team around these two players anytime soon. Rather, this is going to be a slow and calculated process, which is the way to go.

For the last several seasons, at the start of each season, the Minnesota Timberwolves have looked the part of a young talented team ready to make their big breakout. However that has yet to happen, and last season was no different. The Timberwolves, with young talent that is enviable across the entire league, hired Tom Thibodeau, as their new head coach, hoping he could put it all together. That didn’t happen, and the Wolves finished the season 31-51. So this offseason, the team decided to shake things up.

The Timberwolves kept “mega-talents” small forward Andre Wiggins and center Karl Anthony-Towns, considered to be the best young big man in the league. They traded former slam dunk champion Zach LaVine, 2016 lottery pick Kris Dunn, and 2017 lottery pick Lauri Markkanen to the Chicago Bulls for Jimmy Butler and the rights to the Bulls 2 017 first round draft choice center Justin Patton. They also traded point guard Ricky Rubio to the Jazz for their 2018 first round draft choice. We will see if the shakeup finally gets the Wolves to the playoffs for the first time in 14 years this season.

Doesn’t it seem the Dallas Mavericks have been one of the NBA’s best franchises for about 100 years now? Well, not exactly, but you get the idea. Yes the Mavericks have been one of the league’s best for a long time now. They have been riding one of the best players in league history, and by far the most unique, power forward Dirk Nowitzki. He’s had great success, but that may be changing. A year ago, they missed the playoffs for just the second time since the 1999-2000 season, and their prospects of returning to the playoff this season look even worse. This happens to everybody though.

This is an old team and no amount of roster retooling is going to change that. It is time, past time, for the Mavericks to let the bottom drop out, and rebuild. The question is, who is going to tell the team owner Mark Cuban, that his team needs a major rebuild?

The Dallas Mavericks were founded in 1980, towards the end of the NBA's era of rapid expansion. Their first round draft pick Kiki Vandeweghe was so upset that he was heading to this brand new team, that he refused to play for them. Dallas ownership traded Kiki for future draft picks, and ultimately wound up with two great players in Sam Perkins and Rolando Blackman. Some of the best seasons for the Mavericks came between 1985 and 1988. Their best season as a team was in 1986, when the team finished 27 games above .500. Sadly, they could not reach the finals that year, bowing out after the first round.

Perhaps the most known fact about the Mavericks, is that they are owned by the most famous and dynamic owner in sports, Mark Cuban. Mark Cuban has a long history of fines, arguments with former NBA Commissioner David Stern, and non-stop yelling at officials. Throughout their history, the Mavericks have won their division three times, first in 1987, then 2007 and finally in 2010. They have won the Western Conference in 2006 and 2011. In 2011, they also won their first NBA Championship to date.

The Dallas Mavericks have been one of the NBA's premiere teams for long time. Since 1998, they are one of just four teams to win the Western Conference, the others being the Spurs, Lakers, and Thunder. They have two retired numbers since inception. Derek Harper’s number 12 and Brad Davis’ number 15 hang in the rafters at the American Airlines Center. The team is looking to once again rebuild, as their roster is made up of nine players that are thirty years old or older.

The Dallas Mavericks finished the 2014-2015 regular season with a record of 50-32, good for the seventh seed in the Western Conference. The Mavericks made the highlight trade at the deadline, acquiring all-star point guard Rajon Rondo from the Boston Celtics. The move was made to fill a glaring hole at point guard for the Mavericks, and at the time of the trade, it was expected to make the Mavericks serious contenders in the loaded Western Conference. This is not how it worked out at all.

Rondo was benched by the end of the season and the Mavericks lost to the Houston Rockets in five games in the first round of the playoffs. So far this offseason, the Mavericks came close to signing DeAndre Jordan away from the Clippers, but at the lost moment Jordan decided to return to Los Angeles. This led to a fury of comments from both sides, although the tone has settled. The Mavericks, desperate for a center, have brought Samuel Dalembert back into the league. He has not played an NBA game since the first week of January earlier this year.

The Dallas Mavericks have been one of the NBA’s best teams for a very long time. However, it appears that run is coming to an end. A year ago, the Mavericks finished with a record of 24-58, the third-worst record in the Western Conference.

Before the draft, the Mavericks traded Shake Milton for Gianni’s brother, Kostas. For the draft, Dallas held the fifth overall selection, which they used on the best player in the nation a year ago, Oklahoma point guard Trae Young. However, they traded Young to the Hawks for the third overall selection, hybrid guard Luca Donic. In free agency their big signing was center DeAndre Jordan, and they also brought back veteran point guard Devin Harris who began his career in Big D. Later on in the month of July, Dirk Nowitski decided he would return for his 20th NBA season, all with the Mavericks.

Right now, the story seems to be that the Mavericks are going to wait one more-year before they try to rebuild, seeing how far they can go in what is almost certain to be Dirk Nowitski’s last ride through the NBA. So far, they are doing okay, but the experts don’t expect this start to last.
