Orioles 2021 Season Review

The Baltimore Orioles are looking to rebuild once again in 2022. This historic franchise finished the season 48 games behind the division leader. What are the bright spots for Baltimore? Acquiring short stop Ramon Urias from the Cardinals in 2020, it was just a matter of time before he would get some playing time. Urias played in 85 games, with 296 plate appearances. He finished the season with a .279 batting average and a secure spot on the starting roster for 2022. Tray Mancini came within a pitch or two of topping the stats during the Home Run Derby this year. He battled cancer and won. On top of that, Mancini knocked 21 out of the park. Rookie of the Year should be considered for Ryan Moutcastle. The Orioles are three years into a team rebuild. Great things will come. It will just take solid pitching and more time.

The Baltimore Orioles looked to improve upon their season in 2019, winning 54 games. It was an expected outcome. After a long run of success earlier in the decade, the Orioles have entered into a long rebuilding process. Winning 54 games does have it’s advantages, as the Orioles will draft second overall. As of right now, the Orioles are projected to draft Emerson Hancock, the right handed pitcher from Georgia.

This offseason, the Orioles made few impact moves overall. They added Dilson Herrera on a minor league contract. In January they signed shortstop Jose Iglesias and signed catcher Bryan Holiday to a minor league contract. They avoided arbitration with right-handed pitcher Miguel Castro, second baseman Hanser Alberto, right fielder Trey Mancini, and right-handed pitcher Mychal Givens. They also added right-handed pitcher Wade LeBlanc and right-handed pitcher Tommy Milone to minor league contracts. Rather, the Orioles are more focused on growing their young talent, which they already have a nice collection of. First baseman Ryan Mountcastle is going to make his debut this season. Mountcastle has power to all fields and can hit for average too. The Orioles are in the midst of a long rebuild, but, especially in baseball, it can be fun to watch the kids grow.

Since their 1997 American League East title times have been really rough, and they did not make the playoffs again until 2012. Orioles tickets were not in high demand during those bleak seasons. The recent surge has been orchestra by manager Buck Showalter, who came in mid-season 2011, and the Orioles have played winning baseball since that day. It also helps having a great lineup, as Matt Wieters, Adam Jones, and Chris Davis are about as good of a middle of the order as it gets in baseball right now. Their issue has been pitching since their resurgence has been starting pitching. During the offseason they signed Ubaldo Jimenez and also inked Johan Santana to a minor league deal, but they need more.

Their primary rival in the American League East is the New York Yankees. Their next game against the Yankees doesn’t happen until June 20th, when they will begin a three game series with the Yankees in New York. The Orioles are also competitive against the Toronto Blue Jays. Their next game against the Blue Jays happens on June 12th, when they begin a four game series in Baltimore.

Orioles History Goes Back to 1894

Founded in 1894, the Baltimore Orioles are another one of baseball’s oldest teams. Their inaugural season was in 1894 as the Milwaukee Brewers, which is the inspiration for the modern Milwaukee Brewers. During their time in Milwaukee they called two places home. First, Borchert Field, which they only occupied for one season. In 1895 they moved into the Lloyd Street Grounds, which was their home until they moved in 1902 to St. Louis. During their time in St. Louis they were known as the Browns, and the played in the old Sportsman’s Park during their entire time there, before moving to Baltimore following the 1953 season. After moving to Baltimore, they became known as the Orioles, and they played at the old Memorial Stadium until the end of the 1991 season. In 1992 they moved into their current home, which is known as Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

The Baltimore Orioles currently sit in first place in the American League East. The Orioles, since their return to prominence at the turn of the decade under manager Buck Showalter, have built this current run on a balanced offense. That offense ran a little dry this past offseason, so they needed some reinforcements.

After locking up first basemen Chris Davis long term, the Orioles acquired Mark Trumbo in a trade with the Mariners. Trumbo has been the best offseason acquisition so far. Trumbo currently leads both leagues in home runs at 20, and is third overall in RBI's with 48. Orioles pitching, which was a concern entering the season, has held up. What’s good for the Orioles? Home games. As the time of this update, the team is seventeen games above .500 at home.

The Baltimore Orioles had a very good 2016 season. They finished the season with a record of 89-73, good for a tied with the Toronto Blue Jays for second place in the American League East. The Orioles faced off against those same Blue Jays in the Wild Card game, which they lost to the Blue Jays 5-2. This past off-season, the Orioles decided to sit on their hands and not do much, thinking improvement from within would help their chances. They did convince Mark Trumbo to stay in town on a three year, 37.5 million dollar contract. Other than that, they didn't do much other than settle arbitration with numerous players such as Kevin Gausman, Manny Machado, and Chris Tillman. We will see if their plan actually works.

The Orioles have had some moderate success. They have won the American League East division title eight times, most recently in 1997. They have won the American League Pennant seven times, most recently in 1983. They have also won the World Series three times, 1966, 1970, and 1983. Those Orioles teams of the late-60’s and 70’s could flat out play, and they had one of the greatest rotations in baseball history. Jim Palmer, Mike Cuellar, and Dave McNally were the three man rotation of the time, and in 1970, when they won the World Series, these three men combined to win 68 games, 20 for Palmer, 24 for Cuellar, and 24 for McNally. Following their 1983 World Series win the Orioles were rather spotty for the next 15 years, sometimes winning, and sometimes not.

The Baltimore Orioles were baseball’s worst team a year ago, winning just 47 games. The team traded their Super Star Manny Machado at the trade deadline to the Los Angeles Dodgers for five prospects. Secondly, manager Buck Showalter retired at the end of the season. That’s about all that can be said for the Orioles a year ago. Their first order of business was to rebuild their power structure. They selected 36-year-old Mike Elias as their new general manager. Elias helped rebuild the Houston Astros, and this is a complete rebuild, so it makes sense. Elias chose 45-year-old Brandon Hyde as his manager. Hyde comes to the Orioles after working for the Cubs for the last six years. The first moves Elias made were to acquire a pair of infielders, Drew Jackson from the Phillies for signing bonus money, and Rio Ruiz off waivers from the Braves. In January they settled arbitration with infielder Jonathan Villar, right-handed pitcher Mychal Givens, and right-handed pitcher Dylan Bundy. In February they added outfielder Eric Young Jr. and shortstop Alcides Escobar on minor league contracts. The Orioles are in for another long season, but it should be fun to watch the young talent, as well as guys who wouldn’t normally get their chances, get their chances to shine. These players, especially those that are just warm bodies, better hustle and play hard, otherwise they will be sent packing to wherever it is they came from and replaced by somebody who will.
