Minnesota Wild Franchise History

At the end of the 1993 season, the Minnesota North Stars moved to Dallas. Hockey fans would have to wait seven years before the Minnesota Wild would play their first game as a new NHL hockey team in the Western Conference. It took three years to build the team, and just about as long to build the venue that they would call home. The team's first regular-season home game occurred on October 11.

The Wild used their very first draft pick to select Marian Gaborik in the 2000 NHL draft. Gaborik played for the Wild from 2002 through 2009. As the team built up a roster of great players, they managed to make the NHL playoffs starting after the 2002-2003 season. To the surprise of fans, that team made it all the way to the Western Conference Finals.

Cuck Fletcher took over as general manager, from Marian Gaborik in 2009. Mikko Koivu was named team captain early in the 2009-2010 season. The team finished that year with a 38-36 record, and it wouldn't come to be until the 2012-13 season before the team would make it to the NHL playoffs once again. The Wild have made the playoffs in 10 of the past 11 seasons. In 2022-23, they finished the year with an overall record of 46-25 but lost in the first round of the playoffs. Coach Dean Evason will lead the team in 2023, marking this his fourth season at the helm.

The Wild have made 13 playoff appearances, with a playoff record of 34-62. They have yet to win the Stanly Cup in their 23 seasons in the NHL
