The University of Southern Florida Sun Dome is a 55,000 square-foot multi-purpose
entertainment and sports facility located on the campus of the University of South
Florida, which is located in Tampa, Florida. It is located on the southeastern side
of campus and is home to the University of Southern Florida men's and women's basketball
and volleyball teams. The University broke ground on the facility in 1977 and finished
on November 29, 1980.
This multi-purpose facility, host's approximately 300 different events each year,
including concerts, home and garden shows, trade shows, religious services and conventions,
ethnic festivals, rodeos, bull riding competitions, youth sports camps, wrestling,
boxing, Taekwondo tournaments, gymnastics and cheerleading competitions, commencement
ceremonies, lectures and political rallies among other corporate, community and
university events. Performers such as Elton John, Frank Sinatra, Alice Cooper, U2
and Britney Spears have all held concerts from their respective world tours in the
Sundome. The first sporting event to be held at the Sundome was a University Southern
Florida Bulls vs Florida A&M men's basketball game and the first concert was the
wild and crazy Alice Cooper. The arena also had the opportunity to host the WWF
Royal Rumble in 1995 and the USF Sun Dome has hosted six NIT games as well as an
NCAA sub-regional in 1983 with Arkansas, Illinois State, Kentucky, Ohio, Purdue,
and Robert Morris.
Just a few arenas in the United States including the Sun Dome were created with
an inflated roof. Airlocks kept the interior pressurized and the roof up. The original
cost to build the Sundome was 12 million dollars. The arena was renovated in 1993-1994
for another 5 million dollars and in 2000, more renovations took place with an 8
million dollar price tag. In 2000, a new 90,000 square foot Teflon coated roof supported
by a futuristic steel space frame was installed. The roof peaks 115 feet above the
arena floor. State of the art video screens and a new sound system were also added.
The basketball teams also received a new playing surface. The QuickLock Portable
Floor is made of northern hard maple and has red power shok pads attached. The graphics
will feature the "USF" logo at mid-court and BIG EAST logos in the lane at both
ends of the court. All of the renovations took place just in time for the USF Men's
Basketball 2005-2006 season.
The Sundome has a capacity of 11,324 fans within three levels. Up until the completion
of the St Pete Times Forum, the Sundome was Tampa's largest arena and still boasts
a large fan base. Recent renovations to the USF Sun Dome's interior included: restrooms,
dressing rooms, locker rooms and office space. The other amenities of the Sundome
include 2,316 lighted parking spaces within walking distance, over twelve concession
stands and at least one first aid station with certified mobile safety officers
on each level.
The Sundome is a great facility to catch a college game or a major concert, but
be warned, with only 11,000 seats big name performers sell out fast.
