The Minnesota Vikings are a professional National Football League (NFL) team based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They belong to the North Division of the National Football Conference (NFC). They currently play their home games at Mall of America Field in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, located at 900 South 5th Street in downtown Minneapolis, but are on the verge of a new stadium deal. The Minnesota Vikings were the 14th franchise and began play on September 17, 1961.
The Minnesota Vikings have a tradition of greatness. Named after the Nordic people who were ancestors to Minnesota's large population of Scandinavian Americans, the Vikings possess both physical and mental toughness.
The Vikings have successfully won the division 16 times, are one of five NFL teams to win 15 games during the regular season and became the first team to appear in four Super Bowls. But the club also became the first team to lose four Super Bowls. The much coveted Super Bowl Champion title appears to be the Achilles' heal of the Minnesota Vikings.
The Minnesota Vikings embarked on their rich yet dubious playoff history in the year 1968, when they battled the Baltimore Colts in the Divisional Playoffs. They fell behind 21-0 early and ended up losing 24-14. The Vikings followed that year with a 12-2 1969 season. They beat the Los Angeles Rams in the first ever playoff game at Metropolitan Stadium 23-20 and went on to beat the Cleveland Browns 27-7 in the last NFL Championship Game before the AFL-NFL merger. The Vikings played in Super Bowl IV that year, or the last AFL-NFL Super Bowl. The Vikings were dominated 16-0 in the first half, and went on to lose 23-7.
The Minnesota Vikings would return to the Super Bowl in 1973, edging out the Washington Redskins 27-20 in the Divisional Playoffs and steamrolling the Dallas Cowboys 27-10 in the NFC Championship. The Vikings faced off with the Miami Dolphins, but again fell behind early 14-0. They ended up losing another chance at glory 24-17.
The Vikings returned to the playoffs again in 1974, '75, '76 (Super Bowl), '77, '78, '80, '82, '87, '89, '92, '96, '97, '98, '99, 2000, '04, '08 and '09.
The Minnesota Vikings hope to return to the playoffs in the future. The printing up of Vikings playoff tickets is always a joyous occasion for Minnesota sports fans. Don't pass them up when you have a chance!
