Hockey is a huge sport in Minnesota, and the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament every year is one of the hottest tickets in town. Ever since the tournament was moved to the Xcel Energy Center in 2001, the massive NHL-sized arena has nearly sold out just by holding high school hockey. Clearly, people from outside of these school's programs want to come and see some hockey. Students from all sports will come and see their hockey brothers and sisters play for state glory.
In 2004, attendance broke records, attracting 120,114 spectators. In 2006, the average attendance per game in the championship brackets was 18,000 people. In no other state could such a massive convention of hockey lovers meet for anything other than an NHL game.
Some legendary Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament participants include Neal Broten, Herb Brooks, Phil Housely, John Mayasich, Mike Antonovich, Henry Boucha and Mark Parrish. If you get tickets for the ever-increasingly popular State Tournament, you can see some legends in the making!
Now that the top four teams in each class are seeded, the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament is even more organized and competitive. A number one seed can easily get matched up with a number two seed in the championship game, making more a high school hockey dream contest.
The first Tournament ever was held in 1945 at St. Paul Auditorium. The tournament was the first of its kind, breaking barriers in the realm of high school sports. The tournament would eventually move to the Met Center in Bloomington in 1969. In 1976, it moved again to the St. Paul Civic Center. In 1999, the tournament went over to Minneapolis and the Target Center, but it would only be two years until the tournament came back to its rightful home in St. Paul. It is currently being played in the state-of-the-art Xcel Energy Center.
Last year's champions included Hermantown in the single-A division and Roseau in the double-A division. The Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament is perhaps one of the most anticipated high school sports tournaments in the nation, and getting tickets isn't always easy. Get your tickets in advance for next year or you might just be sitting up in the nosebleeds.
