Jannus Landing, located at 200 First Ave North in St Petersburg, Florida is a cool
place to catch a concert in the warm Florida sun or the majestic gleaming moonlight.
The venue boasts that it is Florida's oldest and largest outdoor concert venue.
Jannus Landing hosts an eclectic roster of musicians and is known as a distinguished
downtown hang out. The venue is often referred to as "The Landing" and features
a variety of alternative and rock type musical performers. Patrons can dress casually,
sit in the open air and order from a full bar while nibbling light fare from the
small menu.
Jannus Landing is named for aviation pioneer Tony Jannus. Jannus piloted the first
scheduled passenger flight from St. Petersburg to Tampa. The two Florida cities
were some of the first cities in the world to have regular scheduled flights. This
multifunctional performance space features both indoor and outdoor show space, with
the favorite being the outdoor courtyard. The brick-walled garden space creates
an acoustical reverb that works, and it's become a favorite space for groups and
artists.
Jannus Landing is not large, but actually seeing the show is not always easy. Many
patrons take to standing on benches to see over other people. The crowd that frequents
Jannus Landing is about as eclectic as the musicians who play the stage. Past performers
have included Iggy Pop, Leon Redbone, Cowboy Junkies, Joan Baez and local luminaries.
The Green Room nightclub also draws crowds when no acts are performing in the courtyard.
The recent renaissance of the Jannus Landing area in downtown St. Pete's has created
a popular destination for folks seeking unique and upscale eateries, trendy galleries
and clubs to round out their musical evenings. Local noise ordinances require that
all performances end by midnight and attendance can't exceed 1,500. With space being
at a premium, tickets often go fast for big name acts. With plenty of free parking
spaces within walking distance, you can even splurge on a pre-concert dinner at
one of several restaurants that literally surround the grounds.
