Although the Minnesota Golden Gophers men's basketball team's greatest foray into the playoffs was technically wiped off the NCAA record books, Gopher fans will always remember that magical 1996-97 season with Bobby Jackson, Eric Harris, John Thomas and company. The Gophers went 31-4 that season including a 16-2 conference mark.
The Gophers started their official playoff adventures in 1971-72, when the team put up an 18-7 record with an 11-3 conference record. The success in the regular season gained them an invitation to the NCAA tournament where they made it to the second round. The following year the Gophers team went to the NIT and also lost in the second round of that tournament.
The Gophers wouldn't go back to the playoffs until the 1979-80 season (partly due to NCAA imposed penalties). The Gophers made it all the way to the NIT championship game that season, but lost to Ralph Sampson's Virginia team. The Gophers returned to the postseason in 1980-81, but lost in the NIT third round. The Gophers finally returned to the big dance in 1981-82, when they advanced to the second round but couldn't make it to the sweet 16. In 1989-80, the Gophers finished with a 9-9 conference record and made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament. The following year was the Gophers second best playoff performance in modern times, when they made it to the Elite 8.
In the 90s, the Gophers crashed the dance from 1993-95, but couldn't advance past the second round. In 1996-97, the Gophers made their landmark run that has since been nullified by an academic fraud scandal. The Gophers made it to the Final Four under Clem Haskins, and it was fun while it lasted.
In 1998-99, the Quincy Lewis led Gophers returned to the tournament but couldn't make it out of the first round. The Gophers have made one NCAA tournament appearance in this decade (2004-05), but couldn't advance past the first round.
The NCAA tournament plays games all over the nation, and oftentimes the NCAA will give the honor to Minneapolis to host games at the Metrodome. Don't miss NCAA tournament games when they come through Minneapolis because many of the games can either host a Cinderella story or a nail-biting finish. Otherwise, when the Gophers men's basketball team returns to glory under new head coach Tubby Smith, you can buy Gophers NCAA basketball tickets and follow them to an NCAA host location. Makes a great road trip!
