The Minnesota Golden Gophers football team has one of the longest and most storied histories of any college football team. Beginning in the 19th century the Gophers won their first championship in the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the Northwest. Today they are playing in big-market bowl games designed to attract as much advertising and generate as much revenue as possible.
The Minnesota Golden Gophers had perhaps their best season in 1934, when they beat Wisconsin in the final game of the season 34-0. They were voted as national champions by every national poll and even today are considered one of the best college football teams ever assembled. In 1960, the Gophers made their first trip to the Rose Bowl, after finishing 8-2 in the regular season. They put up a valiant fight against Washington, but dropped the game 17-7.
The Gophers won their first Rose Bowl in 1962 with a 21-3 win over UCLA. The game was a massive event, with nearly 100,000 fans looking on in Pasadena California. Sandy Stephens ran for two touchdowns in the game and would eventually be named to the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame.
The Gophers would go to both the Independence Bowl and the Liberty Bowl in 1985 and 1986, respectively. The Gophers beat the Clemson Tigers in 1985 to get John Gutekunst his first collegiate win as a coach, who had taken over for Lou Holtz for the final game of the season. In 1986, the Gophers went back to a bowl game led by Gutekunst, this time the Liberty Bowl, where the Gophers fell to the Tennessee Volunteers 21-14.
The Gophers made their first appearance in a bowl game since 1986 when they played in the Wells Fargo Sun Bowl in 1999. It was nearly a victorious return for the Gophers, but they were unable to pull it out against Oregon, losing 24-20. The following year, the Gophers returned to the postseason with an appearance in the Micronpc.com Bowl in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Gophers faced off against North Carolina State, an unfamiliar opponent, and stumbled 38-30.
In 2002, the Gophers had another good season under Coach Glen Mason and made it to the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tennessee. The Gophers dominated the Arkansas Razorbacks 29-14 to win its first bowl game since 1985. In 2003, the Gophers had one of their best seasons in history, going 10-3 and beating Oregon 31-30 in the Sun Bowl.
The Gophers came back in the 2004 season to play in another bowl game, this time in the Music City Bowl. The Gophers took it to Alabama, edging them out 20-16. In 2005, the Gophers were invited to the Music City Bowl again, but this time opponent Virginia came from behind to beat the Gophers 34-31. The Gophers went to yet another bowl game in 2006, and became the victim of the biggest bowl-game comeback in Division I-A history, as Texas Tech came back from down 31 points to stun the Gophers 44-41.
With the number of bowl games only increasing over the years to gain revenue, it's a good bet the Minnesota Gophers will return to a bowl game in the near future, especially under new head coach Tim Brewster, who is bringing in a promising attitude for the 2007 Gophers and beyond. When bowl game tickets go on sale, take a warm weather trip somewhere and enjoy watching your Gophers play an exotic out-of-conference opponent.
