The Children's Theatre Company originally started out as The Moppet Players. The Moppet Players produced dramatics, dance and theatre for children. In 1965, The Moppet Players moved into Minneapolis Institute of Arts and was transformed and incorporated as The Children's Theatre Company in 1975. The Theatre originally adapted classic children's literature and books in to popular shows for fans. The Children's Theatre Company also had an early focus on scenic and costume design.
Today, The Children's Theatre Company is located at 2400 Third Avenue South in Minneapolis, Minnesota and is the leading theatre in North America for young people and families in its progressive theatre vision. The Children's Theatre's mission is to advance the art of theatre for families and young audiences.
Since 1965, The Children's Theatre has grown to become one of the three largest theatres companies in the world. In 2003, The Children's Theatre company received a Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre. The Children's Theatre serves 275,000 to 350,000 people and families a year in five different programs. These programs include stage productions, new play development, community partnerships, theatre arts training and an annual regional tour.
In 1997, Peter C. Brosius joined The Children's Theatre as its third artistic director. He is the leader of a progressive and truly essential Minneapolis institution. Some recent hot tickets to The Children's Theatre have been Antigone, Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Disney's High School Musical. The Minneapolis City Pages praised the Children's Theatre production of High School Musical, and in the process awarded the Children's Theatre Best Theater For Drama for 2006. The Children?s theatre is also rated by fans as one of the best theaters in the country.
